Under Xi Jinping, China has clamped down on dissent and tightened censorship (File)

A Beijing regulation professor who has been an outspoken critic of China’s President Xi Jinping and the ruling Communist Party was fired by his college after being launched from an almost week-long detention, his pals stated.
Xu Zhangrun, a constitutional regulation professor on the prestigious Tsinghua University, returned dwelling on Sunday morning, six days after he was taken away by police.
In a textual content message confirmed to Reuters by one in all his pals, Xu instructed the buddy that he had been “relieved of teaching and public positions” by Tsinghua University.
Repeated cellphone calls to Xu went unanswered on Tuesday.
Tsinghua University didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark. The college had suspended Xu from instructing duties since 2019, his pals have stated.
Xu, 57, got here to prominence in July 2018 for denouncing the elimination of the two-term restrict for China’s chief.
Earlier this month, Xu was taken from his dwelling in suburban Beijing by police, who searched his home and confiscated his laptop, in accordance with a textual content message circulated amongst Xu’s pals and seen by Reuters.
Police instructed his spouse that he was being detained for allegedly soliciting prostitution throughout a visit to Chengdu, stated his pals, who dismissed that allegation as character assassination.
At the height of China’s coronavirus outbreak in February, Xu wrote an article calling for freedom of speech. In May, he wrote an article accusing Xi of making an attempt to carry the Cultural Revolution again to China.
Under Xi, China has clamped down on dissent and tightened censorship.
