Switzerland’s prime prosecutor resigned Friday following a drawn-out controversy over his dealing with of a corruption investigation focusing on FIFA, citing a courtroom ruling partially upholding accusations towards him. “In the interest of the institution, I offer my resignation,” Attorney General Michael Lauber stated in an announcement. Lauber, 54, has confronted a number of investigations over his dealing with of the FIFA probe, specifically over various alleged secret conferences with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
In March, a disciplinary investigation discovered he had repeatedly lied when questions have been raised about these conferences and the general investigations of prime FIFA executives since 2015, and ordered him to be docked eight p.c of his wage.
Lauber appealed that ruling, and on Friday Switzerland’s Federal Administrative Court did discover that the disciplinary panel had been harsh in its ruling, and lowered his penalty to a 5 p.c discount in pay.

However, it upheld a majority of the accusations towards him, discovering that the “confirmed breaches of official duty and their seriousness still justify the decision… to opt for the most severe type of disciplinary sanction possible”.
