Gandhinagar:
The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) had detained 49 fishermen and seized eight boats off the Gujarat coast on September 15, the state authorities instructed the Legislative Assembly on Monday.
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani instructed the House that the fishermen have been detained by the PMSA close to the International Maritime Boundary Line.
He stated six of the eight boats have been from Porbandar, whereas remaining two have been from Gir Somnath district.
Such incidents have been taking place at common intervals because the maritime boundary is notional – not visible- within the sea, he stated.
Mr Rupani, who handles Home portfolio, was responding to a question raised by senior Congress MLA Punja Vansh relating to the incident.
Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja stated the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) frequently points warnings to fishermen in the event that they go close to the IMBL searching for a greater catch.
Based on reviews of the ICG, the state Fisheries division suspends boat working licences of erring fishermen discovered responsible of venturing into No Fishing Zone within the Arabian Sea after crossing IMBL, he stated.
The state authorities supplies a subsidy of Rs 20,000 to fishermen for putting in GPS system of their boats, Mr Jadeja stated.
He stated GPS system has been fitted in 5,000 of about 30,000 fishing boats registered in Gujarat.
