Twelve Maoists, 5 of them collectively carrying a reward of Rs 6 lakh on their heads, surrendered in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district on Sunday, police stated.

Four different surrendered ultras- Lakhmu Hemla, Sunil Tati, Manu Mandavi and Maituram Barsa- who have been working in numerous capacities in separate areas of south Bastar, have been carrying rewards of Rs 1 lakh every on their heads, he stated.
The remaining seven Maoists have been lively as lower-rung Maoist members, he stated.
From them, one Amit Kawasi was allegedly concerned within the October 2018 Nilawaya assault, wherein three policemen and a Doordarshan cameraman have been killed in Dantewada, he stated.
“All 12 ultras said in their statement that they were disappointed with the hollow Maoist ideology, and were impressed by the ”Lon Varratu” (term coined in local Gondi dialect which means ”return to your village”) campaign being run by the police in Dantewada,” Mr Pallava stated.
According to the officer, they are going to be offered services as per the federal government’s give up and rehabilitation coverage, he stated.
Under the ”Lon Varratu” initiative launched in June, the police have been placing up posters and banners within the native villages of Maoists, who carry money rewards on their head.
The posters point out the names of rebels and attraction to them to affix the mainstream, the police official stated.
“So far, 82 Maoists, including these 12, have surrendered under the drive,” he added.
