Chennai:
Safety issues over the storage of ammonium nitrate, within the shadow of the explosion of the chemical in Beirut, have been addressed because the substance has been e-auctioned and is being shipped to Hyderabad, sources stated on Sunday.
697 tonnes of the chemical was being saved within the container freight station close to Chennai, sources stated, including that the e-auction of the chemical is over.
The disposal of the cargo will likely be accomplished inside a brief interval by adhering to security guidelines, they stated.
Some containers with the chemical have already left for Hyderabad, police sources stated.
The substance was seized in 2015 beneath the Customs Act 1962.
The cargo was then saved on the freight station positioned about 20 km from town and there was no residential space within the neighborhood of the storage space, they stated.
The chemical was seized from a Tamil Nadu-based importer who had allegedly declared the substance as fertiliser grade though it was explosive grade, the Customs authorities stated.
The consignment, imported from South Korea, was safely saved contemplating the hazardous nature of the substance, that they had stated in a press release.
Following the seizure, the licence of the importer was cancelled, they stated.
While seven tonnes of the chemical was spoilt in the course of the deluge in December 2015, the remaining 690 tonnes have been to be e-auctioned, he stated.
The explosion of two,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate on August Four in Lebanon’s port metropolis of Beirut killed 135 folks and injured about 4,000 and triggered security issues over the storage of the chemical close to Chennai.
