The farm payments which have vastly upset the farmers of Punjab have pushed a wedge between the BJP and its oldest ally Akali Dal. The Akalis have determined to vite in opposition to the payments on the ground of the home and each side have agreed to simply accept it as an irreconcilable distinction. Top BJP leaders are nevertheless hopeful that the lone Akali minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cupboard, Harismrat Kaur Badal, is not going to stop.

The farm payments — which the BJP considers big-ticket reforms on the sector — have been seen as “anti-farmer” by the farmers in Punjab and Haryana. Yesterday, Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal stated, “Before introducing these bills, they should at least have consulted the parties that are essentially farmers’ parties and their allies”.
The Akali Union minister, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, “had expressed her reservations when the matter was taken up during a cabinet meeting,” he added.
On Tuesday, Mr Badal voted in opposition to the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to decontrol agricultural meals objects, together with cereals, pulses and onion.
