China mentioned Friday it had revoked the license for the US consulate within the southwestern metropolis of Chengdu, in retaliation for the closure of China’s Houston consulate earlier this week.
The transfer is a “legitimate and necessary response to the unreasonable measures by the United States”, the overseas ministry mentioned in a press release.
“The current situation in China-US relations is not what China desires to see, and the US is responsible for all this,” the assertion mentioned.
Tensions have been escalating on a number of fronts between the world’s two greatest economies, deteriorating additional after Washington ordered the closure of the Houston consulate on Tuesday inside 72 hours.
China had threatened to retaliate if the US didn’t withdraw its choice.
The Chengdu consulate was established in 1985, and has round 200 employees with roughly 150 regionally employed Chinese employees, in line with its web site.
