Sri Lankan police on Friday arrested three individuals suspected of trapping and killing an endangered leopard and attempting to promote its meat as a remedy for bronchial asthma.
The trio have been detained after police raided their house following a tip-off that they’d used a snare to catch the creature within the central highlands.
“They cut the head off and killed the animal after it got caught in the snare on Thursday,” chief inspector Dushantha Kangara instructed AFP by cellphone.
He mentioned the suspects had thrown the leopard’s head within the forest and eliminated the carcass to promote the animal’s pores and skin, meat and different physique components.
Several leopards have been trapped by snares within the area, some 175 kilometres (110 miles) east of Colombo.
Kangara mentioned there was a preferred perception that leopard meat might remedy bronchial asthma.
Police seized 17 kilos (37 kilos) of leopard meat from the three suspects.
There are believed to be fewer than 1,000 leopards within the wild in Sri Lanka, and harming the large cat is punishable by as much as 5 years’ jail.
Wildlife conservationists have requested the authorities to ban snares and to prosecute those that use them.
