Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican and a troublesome critic of the large tech corporations, urged the Federal Trade Commission on Thursday to interview some former workers of Facebook as half of its probe of the social media large.
Both the FTC and teams of state attorneys normal are extensively believed to be planning litigation towards Facebook for breaking antitrust regulation.
In her letter to FTC Chairman Joe Simons, Blackburn referred to an FTC deposition of Facebook chief govt Mark Zuckerberg, including: “While that is promising, I encourage you to also speak to other Facebook executives and engineers who can reveal the company’s real agenda. Many of them fear letting Facebook’s dominance go unchecked can hold dark consequences for competitors and consumers alike.”
Blackburn particularly urged the FTC to interview such Facebook critics as firm co-founder Chris Hughes, former chief safety officer Alex Stamos and Yael Eisenstat, former head of Facebook’s elections integrity effort.
Blackburn mentioned that Internet regulation, which is one thing Congress would take up, was not ample. “Americans depend on the commission to stand up to Facebook and to fully prosecute entities that violate the Sherman Antitrust Act,” she wrote.
Pursuing the tech giants, the Justice Department sued Alphabet’s Google final month whereas Amazon and Apple stay below investigation, is one factor that Democrats and Republicans have agreed on regardless of a polarised political environment.
Senator Elizabeth Warren, a progressive Democrat, has urged that Facebook be required to promote Instagram, which it purchased in 2012, and WhatsApp, which it purchased in 2014.
