Fuel pump homeowners in Punjab on Sunday mentioned they’ll hold their petrol pumps shut on July 29 in protest towards the excessive fee of taxes on petrol and diesel that’s adversely affecting their enterprise. Paramjit Singh, president of the Petrol Pump Dealers Association, mentioned the gas in Punjab is costlier than in Chandigarh and Haryana due to disparity in tax charges. “We will shut our fuel pumps on July 29 from 8 am till 5 pm against high rate of taxes,” he mentioned.

A Mohali-based gas pump proprietor ended his life on July 22. The affiliation mentioned G S Chawla had allegedly “succumbed to the pressure of loss of volume due to disparity in fuel prices in Punjab and neighbouring states, and revenue loss amid the COVID-19 pandemic”. Singh mentioned Chawala had fought towards the excessive fee of taxes on petrol and diesel. The retail value of petrol in Punjab is Rs 82.35 a litre as in comparison with Rs 77.41 in Chandigarh and Rs 78.46 in Panchkula, in line with a gas pump proprietor.

Similarly, the speed of diesel in Punjab is Rs 75.54 compared to Rs 72.91 in Chandigarh and Rs 73.54 in Panchkula. Punjab imposes 33.40 per cent taxes on petrol and 19.77 per cent on diesel. However, VAT fee in Chandigarh is 22.45 per cent on petrol and 14.02 per cent on diesel, gas pump homeowners mentioned. “The border area dealers of Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib and Rupnagar are the worst hit as they have lost up to 80 per cent of their sales to Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana,” gas pump proprietor Ashwinder Mongia mentioned.
There are 3,450 gas pumps in Punjab and of them, 800 are situated within the border districts that are dropping gross sales due to the excessive fee of worth added tax on gas. Fuel pump homeowners have urged the state authorities to convey the tax charges on par with neighbouring states. They mentioned it could revive petroleum commerce within the state and would additionally generate income to the state exchequer.
“The protest will be to press the state government to bring parity in the tax rates. It will also be a tribute to our member G S Chawla,” affiliation president Singh mentioned. On Sunday, petrol pump sellers within the state saved their gas stations shut for half an hour, he added.
