Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG) has change into the primary IIT to introduce a course on UN-Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 within the B.Tech curriculum from this tutorial 12 months (2020-2021).
Guided by the rules of sustainable growth objectives, this course gives a novel alternative for B.Tech college students to know the ideas of sustainability and work in the direction of constructing a greater society for everybody.
The course will likely be provided to the second 12 months B.Tech college students as a obligatory course, to reorient the considering of younger and dynamic people in the direction of the trail of sustainable growth.
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, the nodal division for this course, has collaborated and pooled sources from eight different departments of the Institute to design and implement the course.
Faculty members from every of those departments will collectively conduct the course and can present publicity to B.Tech college students on the technological, economical, ecological, and societal points of those 17 SDGs.
Prof. T. G. Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati, emphasised the pressing must undertake these 17 objectives as a part of the curriculum in order that the scholars are conscious of the challenges for sustainable growth and the way their roles can result in holistic growth.
Speaking concerning the introduction of this course, he mentioned, “With only 10 more years remaining to fulfill these objectives, it becomes very vital that the students are taught about the goals of inclusive and sustainable growth and through this course, offered by faculty members from across engineering, science and humanities departments, IIT Guwahati wishes to prepare the students to play leading roles in ‘Transforming the World’”.
Prof. Anamika Barua, a Course coordinator from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati, mentioned, “This would be the first time the nine departments of IIT Guwahati have joined together to offer a course at the undergraduate level, realizing that sustainability challenges and inclusive growth go hand-in-hand and have to be understood at the crossroads of science and society through an interdisciplinary lens”.
She additional added, “The students, through this course, would be educated to critically evaluate the idea of Sustainability as an emerging discipline and have an opinion on the role for India, as a nation, in the successful implementation of the new SDGs”.
The course on SDGs will allow college students to appreciate the significance of a secure relationship between human actions and the pure world for a wholesome, clear and secure setting, and, thus, make them accountable people and the world a greater place for inclusive development and total prosperity.
