The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has seized practically 234 kgs of opium from Rajasthan, the “largest” seizure this 12 months but, and arrested two individuals on expenses of drug trafficking, the company mentioned on Friday.
The seizure was made on July 19 from Shadi village within the state’s Chittorgarh district.
“A team from the Jodhpur zonal unit raided the residential premises of a person, R Lal, and seized 233.97 kgs of opium. Another person MK Dhakad of Bhilwara district has also been arrested,” NCB Deputy Director (Operations) KPS Malhotra mentioned in Delhi.
The company additionally seized a sports activities utility automobile (SUV) as a part of the operation, he mentioned.
“This is the largest opium seizure of the year in the country. Preliminary investigation has found that the opium was sourced from the legal cultivation area of Chittorgarh and was destined to Jodhpur,” he mentioned.
The consignment belonged to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan based mostly drug traffickers, Mr Malhotra mentioned.
Opium is dried latex obtained from the seed capsule of the opium poppy plant and it’s chemically processed to supply heroin.
The Central Bureau of Narcotics, underneath the Union finance ministry, offers licence for its authorized manufacturing in three states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
Mr Malhotra mentioned the probe into the newest case discovered that some authorized cultivators, particularly these in Mandsaur, Neemuch and Ratlam districts of Madhya Pradesh and Chittorgarh and Jhalawar districts of Rajasthan, diverted opium by means of unlawful channels and bought it to intermediaries for revenue.
“These intermediaries traffic this opium to other parts of the country for consumption and conversion into heroin,” he mentioned.
