Parliament right this moment handed a Bill for inclusion of Kashmiri, Dogri and Hindi within the checklist of official languages within the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, along with the prevailing Urdu and English.
The Jammu and Kashmir Official Languages Bill, 2020 was handed by Rajya Sabha by way of voice vote. Lok Sabha had cleared the laws on Tuesday.
Replying to a debate on the Bill, Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy stated it was a long-standing demand of the individuals of Jammu and Kashmir that the language they converse ought to be included within the checklist of official languages.
The minister identified that round 74 per cent individuals within the Union Territory spoke Kashmiri and Dogri languages.
He stated that in line with 2011 census, solely 0.16 per cent inhabitants in Jammu and Kashmir spoke Urdu, whereas 2.three per cent spoke Hindi.
Mr Reddy stated the federal government would additionally take steps to encourage different native languages like Punjabi, Gurjari and Pahari within the area.
Participating within the debate on the Bill, Naresh Gujral (SAD) termed it “unfortunate” that Punjabi was not included within the Bill and urged the federal government to rethink it.
“It hurts the feeling of those who are settled there. I would urge the government to reconsider because language is the basis of cultural heritage of the community,” Mr Gujral stated.
He stated 13 lakh Punjabis stay in Jammu and Kashmir.
Mir Mohammad Fayaz (PDP) demanded inclusion of Gurjari, Punjabi and Pahari within the Bill, saying that the motto of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” was missing within the state.
“Include Punjabi, Gurjari and Pahari so that we win the trust of everyone in J&K,” he stated.
Ramdas Athawale (RPI) expressed “support to Dogri and Kashmiri languages” and in his poetic type stated {that a} day will come when PoK will come to India.
Mamata Mohanta (BJD) stated the invoice will facilitate integration of the UT into mainstream. Shamsher Singh Manhas (BJP) spoke in Dogri. Surendra Singh Nagar (BJP) supported the Bill.
