Hyderabad:
The PV Narasimha Rao authorities was profitable in sustaining good relations with neighbouring nations by way of cheap, conciliatory and accommodative method whereas the current BJP dispensation has “failed” in that space, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor claimed.
Delivering a chat on “India’s Foreign Policy – Former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao”, organised by the Congress’ Telangana unit, he described the previous prime minister as a ‘true jewel of India’ and demanded Bharat Ratna for the chief posthumously.
He was addressing the occasion, held by Congress as a part of the year-long beginning centenary celebrations of Mr Rao, who hailed from Telangana, by way of video conferencing.
“The reason things are so bad today is first – a divisive, ideologically driven and arrogant politics which our neighbours pay attention to,” Mr Tharoor alleged, replying to a question on how he in contrast the international coverage dealing with of Mr Rao and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Second, huge difference in personality between the arrogance of the current leadership in our country and the quite, understated, humble approach of Narasimha Rao,” he stated.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP stated Narasimha Rao was pragmatic and wished to “change things” with out seeming to be altering any.
“Finally, Narasimha Rao was pragmatic… he wanted to change things without seeming to bechanging any… you never heard a speech from him saying that all our previous foreign policies are bad and I am changing everything. He portrayed everything was in continuation of the past but at the same time he brought about fundamental changes,” he added.
According to Shashi Tharoor, Narasimha Rao knew easy methods to relate to the neighbourhood in an asymmetrical style, present these nations that India will give greater than it takes versus the current regime.
“For example in the confrontation with Nepal over the new Constitution (there), it looked like India was demanding more from Nepal than Nepal could feasibly give… that is not the approach of a big country to a small country.
“We need to exit of our strategy to be cheap, conciliatory and accommodative. Sadly, that is the place the current regime has failed and that is the place Narasimha Rao succeeded,” Mr Tharoor said.
He further said in one of India’s most difficult periods in 1991, the country was blessed with an extraordinary statesman and a visionary leader in PV Narasimha Rao, who according to him changed the country’s fortunes in an exceptionally transformative way.
His skilful management of alliances and courage to introduce bold economic reforms with Manmohan Singh (who was the finance minister in his cabinet) fundamentally changed India, he added.
“He achieved this regardless of not being a well-liked mass chief, presiding over a minority authorities and as an unintended prime minister. Under him the international coverage of India moved decisively away from pure Nehruvian idealism to extra pragmatic pursuits of nationwide self-interest,” Mr Tharoor added.
