The telecoms watchdog on Monday stated over-the-top (OTT) communication companies don’t at present want a regulatory framework, casting apart the specter of potential restrictions on platforms reminiscent of Facebook, WhatsApp and Google.

“It is not an opportune moment to recommend a comprehensive regulatory framework for various aspects of services referred to as OTT services, beyond the extant laws and regulations prescribed presently,” the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) stated in an announcement.
TRAI additionally stated no regulatory intervention was wanted on points associated to privateness and safety of OTT companies.
Facebook, WhatsApp and Google didn’t instantly reply to requests for remark.
Net neutrality activists welcomed the TRAI’s resolution, however the telecoms business foyer group, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), stated the TRAI had not addressed points reminiscent of regulatory imbalance and non-level enjoying subject between telecoms service suppliers (TSPs) and OTT communication gamers.
