A gaggle of eminent educationists wrote to the University Grants Commission (UGC), asking it reconsider making exams for final-year school college students necessary.
In a letter to UGC chief DP Singh, the educationists mentioned the regulator’s newest advisory on examinations was unlucky as a result of it took “us backwards rather than forward”.
The decision successfully prolonged the interval for holding of exams (for closing 12 months/semester cohorts) till September, the second such postponement. And it creates contemporary uncertainty for states that had already determined to cancel exams, learn the letter that counted former UGC chairman Sukhdeo Thorat amongst many signatories.
“…we are reiterating the reasons why many teachers and institutions had argued for cancelling the exams and declaring results based on previous performance. The recommendation to cancel exams was prompted by an unprecedented health emergency, not by doubts about the value of examinations,” it mentioned.
When confronted with such an emergency, cancelling exams has two essential benefits: First, it avoids the prolonged uncertainty created by repeated (however unavoidable) postponements. Second, it protects the integrity of the examination by refusing to abandon its two most elementary options – impartiality, or equal remedy of all examinees; and shut supervision to stop dishonest, it mentioned.
Given the realities dealing with the overwhelming majority of our college students and establishments, examinations held within the “online” or “mixed” modes will likely be biased as a result of they are going to favour college students with higher entry to the web.
A UGC officers mentioned the fee has come to decision after in depth consultations. While most exams stand cancelled, now we have solely saved the choice open for passing out college students, in view of their profession prospects, the official mentioned.
