The United States on Wednesday hit again at a UN girls’s rights panel that stated some US states restricted entry to abortions through the COVID-19 pandemic, rejecting its interference and the notion of “an assumed right to abortion”.
“The United States is disappointed by and categorically rejects this transparent attempt to take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to assert the existence of such a right,” the US mission in Geneva stated in a launch posted on Twitter.
“This is a perversion of the human rights system and the founding principles of the United Nations,” it stated, citing an Aug. 11 letter it despatched to the UN consultants responding to the “spurious allegations”.
The UN working group on discrimination in opposition to girls and women stated on May 27 that some US states “appear to be “manipulating the COVID-19 disaster to curb entry to important abortion care”.
The panel of five independent UN experts said that states including Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Iowa, Ohio, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee had issued COVID-19 emergency orders suspending procedures not deemed immediately medically necessary to restrict access to abortion.
“This scenario can be the most recent instance illustrating a sample of restrictions and retrogressions in entry to authorized abortion care throughout the nation,” Elizabeth Broderick, panel vice-chair, said at the time.
The US statement cited allegations of forced abortions and sterilisations in China’s western region of Xinjiang and urged the panel to focus on “precise human rights abuses”.
A lack of comment on such issues was “one of many causes that the United States and others more and more see the UN’s human rights system as totally damaged”.
US President Donald Trump, in search of re-election in November, works intently with evangelical Christians and places their causes of proscribing abortion and preserving gun possession on the prime of his coverage agenda.
