Kolkata:
A saree designed by West Bengal’s BJP Mahila Morcha chief Agnimitra Paul, a famous clothier, that includes the get together’s election image lotus, has created a flutter after she requested girls get together employees to purchase it.
In an audio message on numerous Mahila Morcha WhatsApp teams, Ms Paul mentioned she had designed two sarees with the lotus motif priced at Rs 280 every. Those should purchase it from the BJP workplace.
“Women cadres should wear these sarees during party programmes,” she mentioned within the message.
The transfer didn’t go down properly with some within the get together.
“When a person has been appointed as chief of a BJP cell, they should be careful about what they say or ask party cadres to do. Even if she doesn’t ask women cadres to buy and wear the sarees, when a person in position says something, it carries a different meaning altogether,” a state BJP chief mentioned, talking on situation of anonymity.
A former Mahila Morcha chief referred to as Ms Paul’s motion “unacceptable”.
“We have been associated with the BJP for a long time but never felt the need to wear a saree with the lotus symbol. This is politics not a fashion show. The rules of the game are different. When your conduct is under scrutiny, you cannot afford to make such mistakes,” she mentioned, wanting to not be named.
Ms Paul dismissed the feedback as “motivated” and mentioned she had sought prior permission of state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh.
Ms Paul mentioned she had designed just a few sarees with the lotus motif and, impressed with the product, some get together employees prompt that it needs to be produced in bulk. An NGO was now producing the sarees.
“I designed it for free and the money received from its sale will go to the NGO,” she informed PTI.
Ms Paul, who joined the BJP in March 2019 and have become the president of its state womens wing in June 2020, mentioned after working for 23 years as a clothier, she does not must resort to “cheap tricks” to promote her merchandise.
These saris are being offered from the state BJP’s stationery outlet- Vastu Bhandar. The cash that can come from the gross sales will go to the NGO. I’ve no position to play there. These sarees are inexpensive. Do you actually suppose you should buy a cotton sari for Rs 280? It will value you no less than Rs 500, she mentioned.
Ms Paul mentioned the sarees she designs for the market are fairly costly. “I designed the sarees with lotus motifs out of love for the party,” she mentioned.
West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh mentioned he’s conscious of the initiative and allowed the sale of those sarees solely via the Vastu Bhandar at get together workplace.
“Yes, I gave the permission for it. Those interested can buy the sarees from Vastu Bhandar. There should be no controversy over it,” he mentioned.
