With rising numbers of daily Covid-19 cases, around 66% of Indians say a complete lockdown must be implemented in the 15 high viral load districts for atleast a month to contain the spread of the disease. Only 27% said no and 7% were unsure, according to a recent online survey by community social media platform LocalCircles.
In comparison, around 74% of respondents had said they wanted a complete lockdown in high viral load districts in another LocalCircles survey on June 12. Currently, worst-affected districts include Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Thane, Pune, Indore, Kolkata, Jaipur, Surat, Hyderabad, Aurangabad, Jodhpur, Gurgaon and Chengalpattu.
India is the fourth worst-affected country in terms of the number of Covid-19 cases, with 66% of its 5.66 lakh cases being reported in June alone. While Maharashtra has announced an extension of the lockdown till July 31, Nagaland has announced an extension till July 15.
When asked about what approach the government should take to contain the spread of Covid-19 in districts experiencing week-over-week increase in cases and having 500 active cases, 56% citizens said that a partial lockdown is needed, with only shops for essentials, offices and factories being allowed to open. Another 23% say that a complete lockdown was needed. Around 13% thought there should be no lockdown at all, while 6% think that there should be a night curfew but no lockdown.
