Former Afghanistan Fast Bowler Shapoor Zadran Dies at 38 After Rare Immune Disorder Battle

Shapoor Zadran

Former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran has died at the age of 38 after battling a rare immune disorder, bringing an end to the life of one of the cricketers who helped shape Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the news on July 7, while tributes poured in from the cricket community remembering the left-arm pacer for his contributions both on and off the field.

Zadran passed away at a hospital in New Delhi, India, where he had been receiving treatment for several months. His death came just one day before what would have been his 39th birthday.

What Happened to Shapoor Zadran?

According to multiple reports, Zadran’s health began deteriorating in October 2025. After undergoing medical evaluations in Afghanistan, doctors diagnosed him with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), an extremely rare and life-threatening immune disorder.

As his condition worsened, arrangements were made for advanced treatment in India. He was flown to New Delhi on January 18, 2026, after Afghanistan star spinner Rashid Khan and Afghanistan Cricket Board chairman Mirwais Ashraf reportedly helped facilitate his medical visa and treatment.

Doctors continued intensive treatment over the following months, but his health remained critical. Since May, he had reportedly been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), where he remained under constant observation.

During his hospitalization, he also contracted dengue fever, further weakening his immune system. Medical reports indicated that his red blood cell count dropped significantly, making recovery increasingly difficult. Although there were periods when his condition appeared to improve, repeated infections eventually proved fatal.

What Is Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)?

HLH, or Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis, is a rare disorder in which the body’s immune system becomes dangerously overactive instead of protecting the body normally.

The disease triggers excessive inflammation throughout the body and can damage several vital organs, including:

  • Bone marrow
  • Liver
  • Spleen
  • Lymph nodes

If not diagnosed and treated early, HLH can become life-threatening. Reports stated that by the time Zadran reached India for specialized care, the disease had progressed to Stage 4, making treatment much more challenging.
