The air above the ice cools and is thus heavier compared to the surrounding air: since air is a poor conductor of heat, the water ice mound is effectively shielded from heating and sublimation,” says the ESA.
The company says the film has been created utilizing a picture mosaic constituted of single orbit observations from the High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on Mars Express. The mosaic combines knowledge from the HRSC nadir and color channels. The nadir channel is aligned perpendicular to the floor of Mars, as if wanting straight down on the floor. The mosaic picture was then mixed with topography info from the stereo channels of HRSC to get what we see as a three-dimensional panorama of Mars.
