E-commerce websites like Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal have to make sure that the nation of origin is displayed on imported merchandise offered on their platforms, the Centre advised the Delhi High Court as we speak.
The submission was made in an affidavit positioned earlier than a bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan by the central authorities which mentioned that in accordance with the Legal Metrology Act and Rules e-commerce websites have to make sure nation of origin is displayed on the “digital and electronic network used for e-commerce transactions”.
The affidavit, filed by means of central authorities standing counsel Ajay Digpaul, additionally acknowledged that enforcement of the foundations was the duty of the states and union territories.
Mr Digpaul mentioned that each time any violation is noticed, motion is taken by the authorized metrology officers of the involved state or union territory in accordance with regulation.
“The necessary advisory/direction to all e-commerce entities with a copy to the Controller of Legal Melrology of all States/UTs have been issued to ensure the compliance of the provisions of the Act and Rules,” the affidavit mentioned.
The affidavit has been filed in response to a PIL searching for instructions to the Centre to make sure that the identify of the manufacturing nation is displayed on merchandise being offered on e-commerce websites.
