Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday talked about the CAG report on defence offset effectivity may be tabled inside the forthcoming session of parliament. The report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) on offset effectivity was scheduled to be tabled inside the remaining session of parliament, nevertheless could not be carried out as a result of the session wanted to be curtailed following the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.
“The C&AG Report No 20 of 2019… Defence Offset Performance was scheduled to be tabled in Parliament during the budget session (2020). The session ended, before date, due to COVID. Now the report will be placed in the next session. The contents will be known only after that,” Ms Sitharaman talked about in a group of tweets.
Observing that the first Rafale fighter jet was handed over to India in October 2019, the minister talked about, “There is a year-wise phasing of how much offset obligation the companies/OEMs have to fulfil. MoD informs me that claims of such obligations being fulfilled are coming in.”
Last month, India acquired the first set of 5 Rafale fighters from France. In the 36 aircraft deal, Dassault Aviation agreed to provide all the fighters in a flyaway state of affairs between 36 and 67 months from the date of signing of the inter-governmental settlement in 2016.
Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Saturday made a latest assault on the federal authorities over the Rafale fighter aircraft deal. In a tweet, Mr Gandhi quoted a data report that claimed the CAG has submitted its effectivity audit on defence offset contracts to the federal authorities with no level out of any offset presents related to the acquisition of Rafale aircraft.
