Naval forces of India, Singapore, and Thailand are engaged in a trilateral maritime train ‘SITMEX-20’ in the Andaman Sea to strengthen mutual confidence and develop widespread understanding and procedures in the direction of enhancing total maritime safety in the area.
As half of the second version of the train, Indian Navy ships, together with indigenously constructed anti-submarine warfare corvette Kamorta, and missile corvette Karmuk, are collaborating. The two-day train started on Saturday, the Defence Ministry mentioned on Sunday.
The first version of SITMEX, hosted by the Indian Navy, was performed off Port Blair in September 2019.
The SITMEX workouts are performed to boost mutual inter-operability and imbibing greatest practices between the Indian Navy, Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), and Royal Thai Navy (RTN). The 2020 version of the train is hosted by RSN.
RSN is represented by the ‘Formidable’ Class frigate ‘Intrepid’ and ‘Endurance’ Class Landing Ship Tank ‘Endeavour’ and RTN by the ‘Chao Phraya’ Class frigate ‘Kraburi’ in the train.
The train, performed as a ‘non-contact, at sea solely’ train in view of COVID-19 pandemic, highlights rising synergy, coordination and cooperation in the maritime area between the three navies and maritime neighbours.
The two days of maritime drills will witness the three navies take part in a range of workouts, together with naval manoeuvres, floor warfare workouts and weapons’ firing.
