People laid siege to a hearth station in Assam’s Hailakandi district and pelted the police and safety forces with stones on Saturday over rumours of the dying of a suspected thief because of alleged torture by hearth brigade personnel, police mentioned.
Police and safety forces burst tear gasoline shells and resorted to lathi-charge after some personnel, together with senior police official Kulendra Nath Deka, sustained accidents within the stone-pelting, they mentioned.
Tension erupted after rumours unfold {that a} convict, arrested by the individuals for allegedly stealing a cell phone and Rs 25,000 in money from a hearth brigade personnel and handed over to the police on Thursday, died at a hospital because of alleged torture by hearth brigade personnel, a police officer mentioned.
The accused, alternatively, was launched after the police secured a bond from him, he mentioned.
Some of the accused then instigated the general public to put siege to the fireplace station at Basic Road in Hailakandi city, the officer mentioned.
Fire Station Officer Albert I Khobung claimed that fireside brigade personnel weren’t concerned in beating the accused and that an FIR might be lodged over the incident.
Four hearth brigade personnel have been “picked up” for interrogation, Mr Deka mentioned.
An investigation is underway to determine these behind the incident, he mentioned.
