France’s information privateness watchdog CNIL stated on Tuesday that it has opened a preliminary investigation into Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok after it obtained a grievance.
TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, is already below investigation over privateness issues by US, European Union and Dutch authorities.
“A complaint about TikTok was received in May. This complaint is now under investigation,” a CNIL spokesman stated, confirming a Bloomberg report.
He declined to elaborate on the character of the grievance or the identification of the complainant.
In the United States, officers have stated that TikTok poses a nationwide safety danger due to the private information it handles.
President Donald Trump has threatened to ban TikTok and has given ByteDance 45 days to barter a sale of TikTok’s US operations to Microsoft.
In June, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) stated it could arrange a activity drive to evaluate TikTok’s actions throughout the bloc after a request from an EU lawmaker involved about its information assortment strategies and safety and privateness dangers.
In May, the Dutch privateness watchdog stated it could examine how TikTok handles the information of thousands and thousands of younger customers.
